One By One: Target Routine Vaccination

The Access Challenge, in partnership with the Malawi Ministry of Health (MoH), the Africa CDC, the African UnionPfizer, and ADECOTS, successfully launched the One By One: Target Routine Vaccination Campaign in Malawi in May 2024. This phase of One By One: Target Routine Vaccination will support the nation’s target of having 70% of the population fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

One By One: Target Routine Vaccination, which implements a surround-sound approach to promote positive social behavioral change, will run across two districts in southern Malawi until August 2024. The Thyolo district launch occurred on the 29th of May at Nagwengwere Primary School Ground. In Phalombe district, the launch event took place on the 31st of May at the Phaloni Ground. These roadshows utilized non-health activities like music, comedy, and dance to engage community members in discussions around vaccination. Community members enjoyed activities like cultural troupe performances and a football match organized by the District Health Office. Individuals who chose to get vaccinated at the launch were celebrated as COVID-19 Champions of their community.

Among community attendees, the district launches had prominent guests from district-level government, religious leadership, and esteemed traditional leadership. Since its launch on the 29th of May, One By One: Target Routine Vaccination has reached 19,763 people across Thyolo and Phalombe through roadshows alone (data current as of 19th July 2024).

The esteemed Lhomwe Paramount Chief Dr. Kaduya of Phalombe stands holding a placard that reads “Don’t spread false rumours about COVID-19 vaccinations” in Chichewa, the national dialect of Malawi.

Two community members who chose to get vaccinated at the Phalombe launch on the 31st of May hold up their green vaccination cards and their “Moyo ndi Mpamba, Usamalireni” (Life is Precious, Take Care of It) T-shirts.

Youth gather to watch the performances during the Thyolo launch on the 29th of May. The roadshow launch was held at the Nagwengwere Primary School Ground.
